Durvillaea Antarctica

Where to find it?

This giant brown seaweed is easy to identify by its round stipes and narrow palm-like blades. It often exceeds 10 m in length and specimens of 15 m have been found. Its surface is thick and leathery. Durvillaea antarctica is found on the southern coasts of New Zealand, Argentina, Chile (Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego) and around the sub-Antarctic islands, including the Falkland, South Georgia, Prince Edward, Kerguelen, Crozet, Heard and McDonald, Auckland, Campbell and Macquarie islands.
